Henry Ford Health is expanding a virtual nursing initiative across its Michigan hospital network, a move designed to mitigate a worsening regional labor shortage. The health system is deploying high-definition cameras and artificial intelligence sensors to allow remote staff to manage administrative and monitoring tasks. The rollout follows a pilot program at Henry Ford Jackson Hospital and signals a shift toward a "command center" approach to inpatient care.

The system, developed in partnership with care.ai and SONIFI Health, utilizes in-room sensors and interactive televisions to connect patients with off-site registered nurses. These virtual teams handle admission interviews, discharge education, and documentation. During the initial rollout, the virtual staff completed more than 24,000 tasks in one month, according to the health system.

The strategy addresses a significant macroeconomic headwind for Michigan’s healthcare sector, which faces a projected 19 per cent nursing shortage. By decoupling administrative duties from physical bedside care, the hospital aims to retain experienced staff who may no longer wish to perform the strenuous manual labor associated with traditional floor nursing.

Beyond labor logistics, the technology is being positioned as a tool for clinical risk management. Smart sensors monitor patient movement to prevent falls and track protocols for pressure injuries. To address privacy concerns, the system includes a doorbell chime to alert patients before a video feed begins. At night, the sensors perform environment checks to ensure safety without waking patients, a task that has historically relied on physical rounding.

Patient feedback has remained consistent across age groups, with many reporting a greater sense of security due to the constant availability of the virtual team. For the hospital, the efficiency gains offer a potential template for managing high-acuity environments with fewer on-site personnel.

The health system plans to implement the model across all 13 of its acute care facilities. A launch at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital is scheduled for 2026. As US healthcare providers face rising labor costs and a shrinking workforce, the success of this large-scale deployment will likely serve as a benchmark for the integration of remote monitoring into standard hospital operations.
