Huma Breathes New Life Into Telehealth With Aluna Buy

Huma Therapeutics is making a stronger play for the US telehealth market with its acquisition of Aluna, a California-based respiratory monitoring company. Announced on May 16, 2025, the deal includes a growth partnership with Eckuity Capital and a plan to integrate Aluna's smart spirometer into Huma's global digital health platform.

Aluna's handheld device tracks lung function data for asthma, COPD, and other respiratory conditions without the need for regular clinic visits. It is FDA-cleared and on track to gain Class II status as it is folded into Huma's system. The goal is to give clinicians real-time access to patient data, set alerts for early signs of trouble, and manage care remotely.

With the acquisition, Huma brings more than 150 US health systems into its orbit, covering around half a million patients. It is a significant leap in reach for a company better known for its international footprint.

The move fits into a broader trend: blending connected devices with digital platforms to create more proactive care. "The future of telehealth is in solutions that combine reliable data, patient-friendly devices, and secure communication channels," said one digital health strategist.

For Aluna, the deal unlocks global scale and resources. For Huma, it is a clear bet on respiratory care, a fast-growing segment in remote monitoring. Providers and payers alike are leaning into tools that can improve engagement and track outcomes without added strain on clinics.

Eckuity Capital's involvement signals bigger ambitions, possibly hinting at future acquisitions in the connected care space. Still, hardware brings its own challenges such as managing supply chains, ensuring patient use, and handling device data.

Yet the Aluna acquisition shows how digital health firms are evolving. In a crowded field, success may hinge on offering both software smarts and reliable, patient-friendly hardware. For Huma, this deal is a step toward that hybrid future.
