Airport Kiosk Puts a Doctor's Visit in Your Layover

Bradley Airport debuts a telehealth kiosk, the first of its kind in a U.S. airport.

Bradley International Airport has installed a medical kiosk that allows passengers to consult a clinician before boarding their flight. The booth, provided by OnMed in partnership with Hartford HealthCare, is the first of its kind in an American airport. The aim is to make care available wherever people happen to be.

The unit resembles a small cabin. Inside are cameras, diagnostic tools and secure video links. A user's temperature, blood pressure, oxygen level and weight can be measured automatically and sent to a remote provider, who may diagnose minor conditions, advise treatment or recommend urgent care. The kiosk requires little more than a power source, so it can be placed in other crowded venues.

For hurried travellers the booth saves the trip to a clinic and the risk of missing a plane. For airport staff it offers a quick, discreet option during a shift. Hartford HealthCare says similar kiosks in a supermarket in Killingly and a community site in Hartford each attract about 100 patients a month. Bradley officials expect five or six daily users.

"This allows us to meet patients where they are without compromising quality or privacy," said a Hartford HealthCare executive.

The experiment reflects a broader trend towards decentralised medicine, with services appearing in workplaces, shops and transport hubs. Yet challenges remain. Transient settings like airports may limit repeat use. Cross-state licensing rules complicate staffing. And the financial case for scaling up has yet to be proven.

If the Bradley trial succeeds, it could spur installations in other airports, train stations and corporate campuses. For now it offers one more amenity to travellers, alongside coffee, charging points and, increasingly, a check-up on the way to the gate.
